ShortStat Shortly
The Setting
The complete rewrite of ShortStat is in a pretty solid alpha state. Before its (limited) beta release I want to make sure that ShortStat isn’t going to hose anyone’s server under a heavy load. Immense speed improvements have been made in user agent recognition (I’ve expanded the list of recognized browsers to include popular search engine crawlers, validators and even a few RSS readers) and in search term parsing but the new version also hits the database a few more times than the original (a side effect of table normalization which serves to keep the overall database size down).
The Request
Link to ShaunInman.com. If you’ve already linked to me, dig up those links and follow them back here. Browse the site a bit (.com/poser/ is the most neglected section—wink-wink). Go to your favorite page and hit refresh a couple of times—don’t go overboard, I’m not asking for a concerted DOS attack—I just want to get some high-traffic data into the system and see how she holds up.

Eat it, I’m not your monkey.
The ever-so-nice Stan kicks in…
Okay, I hope it works well. I’m a happy user of ShortStat and I believe you can’t fail on your purpose. Keep us updated.
While I’m off to refresh…
<laughter variety="late 80's, end of the cartoon">"that's our Stan!"</laughter>Haha, who’s the wise guy who tried to download
/downloads/shortstat_v4b.zip? Like I’m going to zip it up and put it in my downloads folder before it’s even finished ;D+1 for trying though.
Shaun-
I’ll be your monkey anyday. If you need a beta tester, lemme know. :)
JSM - Stop being such a prude. :)
Jeff
The irony of this is, or course, that JSM is your 3rd highest monkey - erm, referer.
Love your 404 page btw (couldn’t find your beta shs installation - not that I really tried) oh and I’m not the dude who tried to download the zip before it’s threre.
Can’t wait for the monkey beta!
Sorry Akaxaka, that was last week. Stan hasn’t been earning very well this week. But you wouldn’t know that since you couldn’t find the beta install ;D
Well you certainly seem to be alive now. I’ve been using Shortstat for some time. Quite happy to beta-test if required.
I’d be willing to test it again. I had to take it off before because the database got huge (>100MB) after a short while and the display page slowed to a crawl.
Yeah, I am looking at the beta now and I am pretty far down in the running. I guess I should write more about Inman… Maybe I will dedicate a whole category to him!
Just curious who all could receive a copy? A website I’m working on needs a better stats module and I was going to see about intergrating ShortStat into the Postnuke CMS.
Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in beta testing but I already have enough victims for the time being. Hmm, I hope none of the victims are reading this…
Ooo! Ooo! Did you integrate my useless little visitor map idea?
Because if you have, I just thought I’d warn you that it looks like world66 is on to me, my map doesn’t seem to want to load any more. They probably got tired of the 100+ requests they get every time someone loads my visitor map.
Hahaha, no I didn’t. Having considered exactly what you mentioned, I thought better of it! It was fun while it lasted though ;)
Mmmm…shortstat…probably the busiest page on my site - and I’m the only one who hits it!
Shaun - “Release the monkies! Fly my pretties, fly!” //monkies all hit the ground with a dull thud. Shaun - “Hmm, better continue the research.”
OK, I’m going to embarass myself in public now - how about a little mini-tutorial for us “I’ve crammed CSS into my non-programmer’s brain but all this other database/php.mysql bizo is swahili to me” types out there? I’m trying to learn really I am, but I need serious professional help. For this too.
Like … errr … what do I put in the ‘database’ field and what protects this file from being downloaded/searched and my username and password found? ~ashamed shuffle~
If your looking for a beta tester, i’m in :) Looking forward to the release!
Id help in testing as well if youre still looking for more testers!
I just have to say you’re stats package is all kinds of sweet pie.
I love ShortStat; can’t wait for new ShortStat!
Ditto on the sweetness. Very nice stuff, Shaun.
I just downloaded and installed shortstat. I have been thinking about doing it for ages. I can’t beleive I didn’t do it sooner. Now all I have to do is finish the site and write something for people to read. Keep up the good work Mr Inman!
You can experiment on me/my site any time! How far is the limited alpha? Will there be a public beta any time soon?
Jon: (butthead laugh) - you said “package”.
Shaun: Looking forward to the new ShortStats
Shaun, fantastic stat counter type thing. I have implemented it on my site and have found it a center of endless enjoyment… considering that my most searched term was “superman panties”… sorry, now people will be searching your site as well… Anyway, I got to thinking the other day about how I could stop recording myself in my shortstat. I thought of many ideas which failed, until suddenly it dawned on me. What if there was e a button on the shortstat page that when pushed would write a cookie in your browser that would ignore you on your site? Probably wouldn’t be too hard to implement either? Again great site!
Jeebus, that’s a great idea! So much better than doing it by IP—especially when you use more than one computer. Instead of a button I’ll make it a checkbox so you can turn it off for testing purposes. Good call. Superman panties?
