On the Upcoming Summit and One Day Workshop
As mentioned previously in These Links, Again?, I have two speaking gigs coming up in February. The Future of Web Apps Summit and a one day workshop, Developing a Large-Scale PHP Web App: The Making of Mint, are a little less than a month away now so I’m starting to pull together my decks for the events. I’ve asked Kevin Cornell to work up a handful of illustrations for those in attendance to soak in while I speak about the benefits of APIs and how to plan, code and launch a web app.
I think one of the key factors in Mint’s success was actively engaging my audience during the early development phase and continuing that dialogue post-release.
In that spirit, I’m asking those who attended the Making a Mint: Productize your ideas session at Cre824 if there were any topics that I could have expanded on or if the presentation raised any new questions that went unanswered?
For those who will be attending the Developing a Large-Scale PHP Web App Workshop (after looking at the schedule) what are some specific questions you hope to have answered? For those still on the fence about attending, is there something missing from the schedule that if covered would sway your decision?
I find that I am a much better dialoguer than monologuer—or as I said at Cre824, “I’m no super villain”—so lay it on me. Your feedback will help inform how to best frame the topics I already plan to discuss and make this a more valuable use of time for everyone who attends.

I know this isn’t really what you’re asking for, but is there any plan of releasing the presentation afterwards, or even just some sneak peeks of Kevin’s illustrations?
I just want to second the request for a post-release of the talks (either slides or perhaps a podcast). I am unable to attend either of these events, but i would really like to hear what you have to say about develop large-scale php webapps as well as the development of an API.
It looks like you got a really long speech regarding the development on Mint which by the way is a great web application.
Good luck with your speech!
I wasn’t at cre824, but I did watch most of the presentation live on the cre824 website.
I found it really helpful, and it might be helpful to hear more about pre-release marketing (getting a “hype”), which definitely happened with Mint.
And I’m with Dan, will this be available online anywhere?
Looking forward to hearing what you have to say at the Summit Shaun. :)
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend either, but for those who will be able to attend, they may be able to benefit from more details on: 1. The methodology you followed while developing such an app 2. The mistakes made and how they’ve impacted your development process
I too, will hope for a post of the presentation here accompanied by Podcast.
Ah Shaun should be a good talk you attending the one in June too?
Hey Shaun, first off I’m very much looking forward to meeting you at the summit. Should be good.
To answer the question about the presentations being released; I know that every visitor doesn’t come away empty handed. There is the “survival Guide” which has all the presentation material on and some working examples in some cases.
There was also talk that these survival kits would be released to everyone after the shows for a small fee. I am not sure if this is going ahread though.
All of this is based on the individual talks, the SUMMIT is a completely different kettle of fish so I may be wrong.
Shaun: I also would like to know about what pitfalls you feel into during the development or what you did to avoid these pitfalls as best you could.
Cheers all
It sounds like an awesom experience!
I’ll definitely be releasing the illustrations after the Summit. Kevin did a excellent job with them. Slides will follow as well. Not sure about a podcast of the event though—that’s more a question for Carson Systems.
Someone asked about @Media in June. Unfortunately that’s right around our wedding so I won’t be able to make it. Maybe next year though.
